The beginning of Royal Dragon started on 25 October 2016. I remember feeling a little tired when I woke up that morning. I got up to have a wash and went to get an apple, just like I always did. I suddenly noticed that I couldn’t chew with the left-hand side of my mouth. I went to look in the mirror and saw that my mouth was drooping. I thought that I had had a stroke.
As it happened I had arranged to film a video for the 50th anniversary of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) at two o’clock that afternoon. I called my secretary straight away – she has always been very hard-working and worked at another one of my companies for over ten years. She called the team at HKTDC, who told her that the recording could only be postponed for one hour (the director, cameraman, makeup artist and technicians were already on their way). I didn’t want to mess up everyone’s plans, so I decided to go ahead with the recording. We managed to finish everything on schedule and I breathed a deep sigh of relief.
The next day I went for an MRI and CT scan. Fortunately, it was not a stroke, just a virus that had affected my facial nerve and caused paralysis in the left-hand side of my face. I was prescribed steroids to suppress the inflammation, and a week later I was much better. The doctor recommended acupuncture to speed up my recovery, and after six acupuncture sessions over a period of three weeks during November I had made a full recovery. On 1st December, as planned, I attended a cocktail reception to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the HKTDC. The director and some of the guests commended me on my video. It was as if nothing had changed – I was my usual self, and I felt very grateful.
I have Chinese acupuncture to thank for my recovery. The history of acupuncture dates back 3000 years, and I decided that I would make it my mission to promote traditional Chinese medicine and culture to a global audience. I would donate half of my profits to charity to help people in need.
Royal Dragon was founded a week later on 7 December 2016.
